STOP PUPPY BITING

PUPPY BITING IS NORMAL (BUT)…

However, excessive puppy biting is usually a symptom of something else... does your puppy have a good daily balance of:

MENTAL ENRICHMENT

It tires their brain as well as their body

Use mental enrichment like sniffing, training, puzzles or food toys to engage their brain. Scatter feeding their meals in the garden, is an easy option to implement. The search & sniff will make their brain work much harder, than if their food is placed in a bowl.

CHEWING

Chewing produces feel good chemicals

Often puppies need 3meals a day until puppy biting subsides. Suitable long lasting chews can also help them to chill. Having safe soft chew toys to hand to redirect them on to, if biting does occur, is also useful.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE

Low vs High arousal

Choose low arousal activities such as walking or sniffy walks as the main portion of their daily physical exercise. High arousal activities like playing, tug, fetch should be a smaller proportion and very short sessions, to avoid over-arousal.

SLEEP

Does your pup have a bitey 5mins then crash?

Usually in the evening and it's a bitey whirlwind? This is often due to a lack of naps. Puppies should be sleeping 20+hrs each day, but if the house is busy, he stays awake to check it out. Find a quiet spot in your house, that pup can nap & avoid an over-tired pup.

ROUTINE

Find the balance that works

Build a daily routine which includes a balance of mental enrichment, physical exercise, & good quality undisturbed naps. A good routine will mean you see a drop in the excessive puppy biting, because your pups needs are being met before the biting occurs.
